Miniserenity

Okay, I'm a gadget-head. I admit it. But there is something just unutterably cool about watching a movie on my phone.

This little picture, all bright and miniature, with the big stereo sound coming in over earphones--it's like a tiny secret paradise. Brings out the little kid in me--the one who built forts out of blankets, you know?

Betcha can't guess what movie I transferred first, huh?

Oooh look. There's Mini-Mal. Hee!

I searched and searched till I found the Qtek 9100, aka the I-Mate K-Jam, aka the HTC Wizard, aka the Vario (all the same product marketed under different names). No cellular provider in the US offers it, so I bought an unlocked version as an import, and moved my own damn SIM chip from my old Nokia to the new device--it worked like magic and I thumb my nose at T-Mobile. The cellular providers would love for you to believe that's not possible, but it totally is.

HP is making a new PPC phone on the Windows Mobile 5 platform as well, and I think some US cellular providers offer it.

These "convergence devices" are expensive--you pay the price of a phone, plus the price of the pocket PC you're replacing, plus a premium for the convenience of having only one device.

But I have to tell you, I love mine. I get TONS of use out of it. It does everything you mention, in a small and beautiful form, and nobody--nobody else has one like it. *geeks out happily*

ok, do you happen to have any links for this stuff? i have been putting off getting a new cell (even though sometimes the os freezes on me and so i have to take the battery out).

i would dearly love to get something like what you mention... i have considered the treo but one of the guys here at work has it and i just didn't like the "feel" of it, plus i don't think it has that much memory...

Hee! I thought you'd never ask!

Here's a useful smartphone/PDA phone forum.

Here's some excellent information about unlocked mobile phones that will empower you in a way your cellular provider doesn't want you empowered. Also, lots of good travel-with-phone info on that site.

Here's the spec on the HTC Wizard, also known as QTek 9100, I-Mate K-Jam, and a few other names.

Here are Mad Monkey Boys, the cool guys who sold it to me unlocked and imported from Europe.

And here is a great site for custom leather cases. You do not want to carry one of these fragile boys unprotected.

Things to consider:

  • Operating system (I wanted Windows Mobile so I could keep my book readers and have the greatest choice of third-party applications--but there are several others)
  • Tri-Band or Quad-Band phone (Quad-band is important if you're going to travel abroad)
  • Wireless connectivity (I wanted both Bluetooth AND WiFi, so that narrowed the range a lot)
  • Screen size (A standard phone screen was just too small, though the RAZR comes pretty close)
  • Form factor (The QWERTY thumb keyboard was a selling point for text messaging)
  • Locked or unlocked? (Locked means you buy it from a cellular provider and it's tied to a plan. Unlocked means the provider can't limit you to a particular brand--you take the SIM out of your old phone, put it in your new one, and the provider doesn't know the difference.
