Draft 8, 100%

I finished my final draft of Restraint on Thursday and sent it out yesterday to four champion fellow writers willing to read it for structure, pacing, flow, and logic. That's a big, big job.

I expect to get suggestions back for further small changes, and of course I spotted typos the instant I hit the send button. I could undoubtedly still shave a few words for style, or add a sentence here or there to fill out a minor plot point, but the novel--this novel--is finished. Any big changes at this point would be making it into a different novel.

It's a little weird, cleaning up all the files, closing all the research tabs, shutting down the gigantic spreadsheet called "Engineering Restraint" after more than two years of rewrites. The prospect of starting a new project is daunting.

But I'm starting. I'm thinking about the new political situation, and how it's my responsibility to write for the Resistance in some way. Not a dystopian Hunger-Games-ish thing--that's not who I am as a writer--but somehow a weaving of resistance into the fabric of the historical novel I'm already researching.

It was a gift, but I can't remember the maker's name offhand. My DW default is an IM Peach, I think I might re-make it to add the Trump(et).

congratulations on this. I read the novel at a03 and followed your comments re some of the writing/editing books you've found helpful. I'm wishing you the best on this long, arduous project:) I hope to have my own long project finished *some* day;)

I'm here to root for you in the process! I've never done anything so rewarding in my life than learning how to write--really write--by finishing this damn novel to an external standard. It was arduous and sometimes painful, and even ego-shattering at several points, but oh boy howdy did I learn a lot!

Yay! Restraint is amazing and I look forward to being able to purchase the book/s one day. :)

but somehow a weaving of resistance into the fabric of the historical novel I'm already researching.

Sounds interesting. Good luck with it. :)

Thank you! It will be one book, or none. An editor suggested I make it into a series, but it would still have been just one really really long book divided into three. I decided severe cuts were a better choice.

The final product, if printed, will make a book of roughly 450 pages, so what you might call "juicy" but not a doorstop.

Woot! That is an amazing milestone. Go, you! Also, I think weaving the fabric of resistance into your work is an excellent idea.

Thank you. I've been thinking about that weaving-in for the past few days, and I think I can detect the tip of an idea coming over the horizon.

Back after a long absence and so glad to see Restraint find new life as a novel! Can't wait to read it.

Thank you! It's very close now--my full-novel beta readers are getting back to me with comments, and I attended a workshop last weekend that encouraged me to self-publish ASAP. I'm going to need to find a cover artist! Eeep!
