Hello. My name is DarkEmeralds.

*taps mic*

*peers out past the lights into the auditorium*

Is this thing on?

*clears throat*

I have missed personal blogging! My online life has dwindled to Twitter (@darkemeralds), where I get all my news, including fandom news. I think I'd like to expand back onto the internet again. Maybe.

So, what's new? Let's see:

My sofa-search of last winter passed through hot pink and bright orange, and landed on white.

DarkEm's living room showing a white couch, a black and white striped rug, and a purple armchair
I am now 90% IKEA

Maybe it was the refreshed living room, but one day in May or June, all my reasons for isolating myself in my house vanished. I can't even remember what they were. I started having people over for the first time in several years: luncheons with plates and forks! A houseguest! (The white couch is a sofa bed). Neighborly drop-ins. Company. I remembered with a sense of wonder that I used to give actual parties now and then. Who knows? I might again.

I've put a table with an umbrella and four chairs on my patio. It should cool off enough by September to serve food out there. That'll give me time to finish tidying up.

DarkEm's tiny hardscaped back yard with a table, a black umbrella, some chairs, and a fountain
The chairs swivel!

In the yard cleanup, I've rediscovered gardening. I started with a drip system and some hanging pots on the front porch.

Hanging black and white flower buckets on DarkEm's porch, with nasturtiums and petunias
Maybe I'll work back up to real gardening next year

I've started a new novel (20,000 words of aimless plot-seeking so far). I joined Oregon Writers' Colony a couple of weeks ago, and yesterday became part of a small critique group. It's possible I'll have more to say about all three of these things.

I'm still riding my bike and I still have no car. In fact, I've let my license lapse, and have probably forgotten how to drive. I recently discovered Uber.

Tomorrow evening, by special invitation and despite the 102°F/39°C forecast, I'm going to ride the rails of Portland's not yet open Orange Line, over Tilikum Crossing, Portland's newest bridge.

The Tilikum Crossing, a cable suspension bridge, seen from the east bank of the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon
It'll carry light-rail, bus, bike and foot traffic only. No cars or trucks.

Okay, not exactly a mic drop. Just life. What's new with you?

Hi! Yay!

Gosh, my browser doesn't even log me into LJ automatically anymore. Time to come on home.

Hello again, my friend! What lovely pictures! You have such a wonderful sense of style. I am envious. I wish I could write more by my space bar is all buggered up and it's driving me up the wall. I shall have to consult YouTube to figure out how to fix it.

Glad to hear from you, though!

Buggered up space bar? That's pretty much a deal breaker. Oh nooooo!

My six (or was it seven) year old Ubuntu laptop finally became unusable, so I had to replace it recently. Everything is Windows with this touch-screen, convertible-to-tablet business that seemed so stupid and pointless...until I tried it. It's AWESOME.

I hope you can get yours fixed. When my spacebar went blooey, there were crumbs under there. Could that be it?

Love the couch and design of the room. But biking in 102 weather? Yuck. Good to see you back!

Yeah, I'm all for biking in inclement weather, but it feels just plain dangerous when it gets hot like this. I'd rather ride when it's below freezing than when it's above 90.

Finishing not-so-old job tomorrow, starting newer job Monday. Happily editing in every spare moment. Loving my still-newish house, but needing to finish up the fiddly bits of moving in (repositioning art, reorganizing closets, getting a load of donations together). Wishing it would STOP BEING SO BLASTED HOT; I DID NOT MOVE HERE FOR WEATHER LIKE THIS. Ahem.

Isn't it draining, this heat? You're up Seattle way, aren't you?

New job and still new-feeling house? That's wonderful--at least, it sounds wonderful (no unwanted unemployment time, art on the walls)!

I just had a look at your journal and I don't see anything about either big change (possibly locked) but I'd love to know more.

I keep meaning to come back, too. I keep trying and failing. I then try to convince myself that personal blogging is dead, and there's no point, and I should just backup my entire ten years' worth of LJ and call it quits...

But I can't convince myself of that, either. I still like it here.

The living room re-do was surprisingly not killer expensive. IKEA and paint account for most of it. Of course, I had to assemble that couch, and it weighs a ton. That was a demanding evening's work!

I missed you! Lovely pictures! And hurrah for the new novel!

Hi there! I think of you so often. I'm glad you're still here on LJ. How's your summer in NJ? We're positively baking here.

How lovely to hear from you again! It seemed odd to see the white sofa because I had a fuchsia pink clear one in my mind.

I'm so glad that everything is slowly working itself out, and you're ready for changes at the right pace. Love the flowering pots!

I look forward to more frequent posts, but only when you fell like it!

That fuchsia pink was very much in my heart, too! I'm glad it didn't work out, though. I fought the very idea of white because it's so impractical, but then IKEA had this one with washable slipcovers, so I took the plunge, and it really does leave me a lot more decorating scope than the pink would have done.

How's life been for you?

I remember the state of the living room when you were redoing it: what a success! is that lovely purple velver chair IKEA? LOVE it with the dark green, and the white sofa is sharp and light!

Hey there! Lovely to hear from you.

Coming from the possessor of one of the most classically elegant living rooms I've ever seen a picture of, that is praise indeed!

The chair is my one nod to actual grown up furniture. I got it at Dania. It's just the right degree of comfortable: I can sit here for an hour, but then it sort of forces me to get up and move around. Unfortunately, the microfiber fabric is now permanently impressed with my butt print.
