My audience (Hitchhiker's Guide) didn't have a real noticeable reaction to it, though a couple of fannish types in the row ahead of me exchanged meaningful looks. There might have been some nudging.

Seeing the trailer a) in full size and sound and b) with an audience of strangers, however, did let my step outside my own fannishness a little and see it with fresh eyes.

It's so BIG. There's Simon, all blue-lit and faux-military, and there's Mal's voice filling the big surround-sound auditorium, and Jayne ripping open his jacket, and of course River. Gotta admit, Summer looks fabulous on the big screen. Joss isn't wrong about her movie-star potential.

And Nathan. Guh. Translates very well into the monumental scale.

Someone not already in love with Firefly would come away with
  • Sci-fi! With Ass-Kicking Girl! Who doesn't look like a bimbo!

  • Funny lines! Funny pilot guy! Cynical handsome dude with gun and attitude.

  • Gritty and messy (especially compared to the shiny and ultra-high-budget Episode III trailer that preceded it).

  • Wow, that assassin walking through the liquid photo of ass-kicking pretty girl is a really cool effect.
...in about that order.

Would this make them want to see it? I'm not sure I sensed any appointments being made for "This Fall"--it feels like a preliminary trailer. But an intriguing one. It says, "Different and new," even without benefit of the titles that actually say that.

I think the trailer serves its function well: tantalize and intrigue. Hopefully a little more to come as the release date approaches.

Oh, and I loved every minute of Hitchhiker's Guide.

Jealous
I saw HHGTTG on Saturday - mostly because I wanted to but partly because I wanted the BDMT in all it's glory. Damn thing didn't show. Especially frustrating as 1) I have a dial-up connection 2) the first time I waited 45 mins to open the BDMT no sound came through 3)the second time I opened the BDMT I was so excited when it finished I accidentally hit 'back' on the site and lost it all (I'd watched it over and over as it loaded so I had really seen it all but I was planning on watching a few more hundred times) 4) I can't work out how to save the gorram thing to my hard drive. AAAGH. I liked HHGTTG also - felt quite true to DA's spirit.

Re: Jealous
Oh dear! I could burn the trailer to a CD and send it to you the old fashioned way--would that help?

H2G2 seemed true to the DNA spirit to me as well. At more than one point, it brought a tear to my eye--nostalgia, love for the work, Douglas not living to see it--and I do believe he'd have been quite pleased with the movie.

Re: Jealous
All three versions of the trailer (small, medium, and 'you can't play it unless you have a Mac') plus kernelm's fabulous every-frame screencap set, burned to CD and placed in the hands of the US Postal Service this afternoon.

I compromised and selected the not-too-many-days-but-I-can-actually-afford-it postage. Look for it in a week or so.

Re: Jealous
You are truly wonderful. I don't know what to say. Thank you seems redundant. But it's the best I have

THANK YOU.

I was thinking about you getting to see the BDM tomorrow as I drove home from work. Enjoy. I'll look forward to talking about it with you afterwards.

THANK YOU.

Prepare to be deafened

I GOT THE DISC!!! I GOT THE DISC!!! I GOT THE DISC!!!

THANKYOU!!! THANKYOU!!! THANKYOU!!! THANKYOU!!! THANKYOU!!!

The BDH look so gorram great and it SOUNDS wonderful.

The screencaps are fab too. (Randomly found one where the smoke is coming out of Mal's gun - very cool.)

I have to go cook dinner (why did it have to be my turn tonight??) but I will be watching the BDMT about 400 times before bed.

Nathan made some comment (early in shooting, I think) about how bit his nostrils look up there on the big screen--"you could park a Buick in 'em" was the gist of it.

And that's so, but if ever nostrils were sexy...

And he flares then so effectively. They could practically win an award all on their own.

'And the award for "Best Nostril-Flaring in a Scene Depicting Sexual Tension or Anger" goes to...may I have the envelope please...?'

Hah! And I need a sexy-nostril Mal icon.
