External motivation

It's been true all my life and I don't see it changing at this late stage: I'll accomplish things for a deadline or for someone else that I'll let go for years when I'm my only audience.

[personal profile] kis has several times expressed a concern that I'm overdoing the home improvement for their visit (in three days! Eeeeee!!!), but it's a fantastic motivator, and I'm not doing anything that didn't desperately need doing.

It's the back end of a perfectly splendid September Saturday, and I'm happily tired (and prophylactically dosed on ibuprofen), having sawed, spackled, chiseled, pounded, painted and pruned things that have been left undone for as much as ten years. Several of them seemed too difficult or too complex for me to tackle, but with the Magic of External Motivation® I suddenly found simple, obvious solutions.

It's like getting a new house! I hardly know the place.

Oh, I am exactly the same way. I like to make commitments to other people sometimes just to be sure I'll get around to doing something I need and want to do anyway. It is, after all, no accident that almost every single piece of fic I have ever posted is a gift-fic.

Yes! I've never done gift-fic because I'm afraid to commit. At least with home improvement, I can hire help in a pinch. But writing? So scarily solitary an activity!

I am really thinking about what you've said. Maybe I should commit to some gift-fic and a deadline. Maybe I'd actually grow as a writer.

I totally recommend it as a productivity strategy. I mean, it is sort of terrifying, but mostly in a sort of exhilirating and creative way. At least, it's like that for me. I do Yuletide every year, and I utterly freak out about it and end up writing my assignment in the last day or two, but I love it nevertheless and would still call it an invigorating and worthwhile experience.
