March forth

I did absolutely nothing resembling Marching Forth on this March 4th, I am sorry to report. I overslept in an attempt to fend off this unusually slow-encroaching cold/virus thingy that's being inexorable like a glacier.

Faced with a choice of riding my bike to work or catching a bus in this very low-energy state, I still chose bike. The bus option felt like a sea of microbes, and I think the bike ride actually did me some good.

The Very Important Meeting that was my main reason for making an appearance today began with the boss asking me if I was feeling any better, and me establishing frankly that I was not. "I seem to get a semi-annual cold," I said. "Happily, I don't get anything else."

One co-worker, a noted idiot, said, "I never get colds. That's because I had kids. Raising kids builds up your immunity."

Yeah. Duly noted for my next life.

*intones mantra* Lucky to have a job...lucky to have a job...lucky to have a job...

I hope you feel better soon.

Kids are worse than plague rats for spreading diseases. Or mosquitos. Yeah, kids are like mosquitos.

They do buzz about annoyingly sometimes. But they have the amazing power to grant respectability, even to noted idiots.

Sure, maybe raising kids builds up your immunity, but I'd point out to your co-worker that it also ages you much faster. My mother still blames me for half the grey in her hair.

LOL! Yeah, well, mine got gray without any help from reproduction.

I just love it when breeders make lame-ass remarks that aggrandize their parental status. It's a completely unconscious, unexamined bigotry--the association of a particular problem (my incipient cold) with the "failing" of childlessness.

Douche-y coworker is douche-y.

Wow, there's a whole lot of fail in that comment, no? Hey! Let's have kids so we can improve our own health based on dubious anecdotal data from people with no medical training whatsoever! And also! People with kids are automatically better, did you get the memo? And clearly! You have made a failure in judgment by not reproducing and are being punished with getting sick. Cause and effect, bitchez!

"Raising kids builds up your immunity."

Yeah, you know what else builds up your immunity? Resisting the urge to kill dumbass coworkers who say stupid shit. Your immunity to Stupid, that is.

LOLOLOL! Yes yes yes.

What I actually said to her was, "What science-y blog did you read THAT on?"

Her answer, "No! It's true! My doctor told me!"

As I said, a noted idiot.

Ya gotta love the unexamined privilege of the breeders-without-a-clue. I especially love the Appeal to Authority argument there, i.e., "My doctor said that [something less authoritative than I think they said, such as 'parents are exposed to more causes of illness and their immune systems have a slightly higher possibility of being more robust than they might be otherwise, though of course the the converse is also a possibility to it's most likely a wash' but I took that to mean that I of course am the paragon of virtue because I have the notable exceptional talent of, you know, reproduction] and so I have an Official Ruling From The Judges that I higher up on the Human Awesomeness Hierarchy than you are."

Noted idiot, indeed.

Sometimes the only answer is, "Well! There ya go, then."

Because the sinkhole of illogic and privilege is just too deep to wade into. This, I'm pretty sure, is why the FSM gave us LJ.

Well then, all I have to say is thank gog for the internet, where all the viruses are made of ones and zeroes.

And you can laugh online. That's what Youtube is for!

Yes, but according to my deep-thinking coworker, you won't get them AGAIN. She had a whole theory about the immune systems of children, and weak and strong germs and IDEK what all else. It was nuts.

WTF. The response to that is, "Well my annual cold will never come home knocked up, on drugs, or require paying for 4-5 years of college. I think I still win!"

I am shaking off my own annual cold, and yeah, no kids (thank god).
Mar. 5th, 2010 07:51 pm (UTC)
LOL. Yeah! *solidarity fist-bump*

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Hee. Some people...

*tea and soup*
Mar. 6th, 2010 06:24 am (UTC)
Ooh. Soup sounds good! I wish I had some.

I had some homemade veggie soup for dinner. It was nummy.
