This perfect day

Every time something goes wrong with my bike, and every time I drive my car, or even walk in a busy area--especially downtown--I start to think how hard and scary it is to get on that bike and proceed into traffic. I wonder how I do it, and think I might not have the nerve next time.

I was thinking that as I was walking Clyde the eight or ten blocks to my new best friend, Bike Gallery's downtown store, an hour ago.

They fixed the flat for me in a few minutes (during which I resisted the strong urge to buy a new helmet, a front basket and a floor pump with stern self-talk about waiting for my tax refund), and when I emerged onto SW 10th Avenue, I was still a little hesitant. I thought, maybe I'll just walk him back on down to work.

Yeah, right.

It's 57 degrees out there today (14C), all buds and shoots and blue sky, and ten BAZILLION people were out grinning and squinting at the sun. I hopped on Clyde and oh my God, it was glorious. For a ten block ride I didn't even bother with my helmet. Hair, meet breeze. Retinas, meet Vitamin D. Mouth, meet idiotic grin.

I haven't ridden on a spring day before. There is NOTHING that's gonna keep me from doing it every day from now on.

Isn't it lovely this time of year? Many of the bike blogs I follow are speaking in celebratory terms of city riding (London, Chicago) as winter loosens its grip.

Here, of course, we barely had a winter, but still, the sun and blossomy air are a wonderful change.

Yes, oh yes . . but it does make it hard to go back to days like today. I have to pep-talk myself into liking the rain again after such a gorgeous spell of blue sky!

I find that I enjoy riding in moderately foul weather, for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the lack of sweat. But also, fewer cyclists on Portland's busy bikeways, and fewer casual pedestrians and runners to avoid.

My commute is short, however--what's half an hour of being a bit damp? If it were an hour, in colder weather, I'd be way less inclined to enjoy it, I think.

Also, hello! And thanks for visiting.

This weekend
I *highly* recommend heading down to waterfront park, as all the cherry trees will be blooming, and the weather on Saturday is supposed to be pretty nice. Take a nice, leisurely ride along the waterfront, ride calmly around people walking, smell the air and look at the river with the sun reflecting off...

Yeah, me too! I go from the Steele Bridge all the way to OHSU South Waterfront. Makes for a great commute, I love it!

And if you go on the Eastbank, you can enjoy the across-the-river view of that cloud of pink.

How do you get up that hill?? That would defeat me, I'm afraid.

Re: This weekend
By the way, the video is lovely, and I left you a long comment on your blog, which your blog ate!

I use Chrome, and it's ironic (to say the least) that Blogger blogs are the worst culprits, but I wanted to let you know. That white bike that your companion is riding is GORGEOUS! What is it?

Re: This weekend
It actually didn't eat the comment, I just have comment moderation turned on, so I had to approve it. But yes, Chrome does have some weird issues with blogger blogs, ironically :)

That's my wife in the video, and that's the Electra Amsterdam we just sold :) Her current bike is this Raleigh: http://www.flickr.com/photos/poetas/3755764845/

Ah, okay. My deathless prose will not be lost!

And those are some sweet bikes, those Raleighs.
