Woo hoo!

Me on August 30: I have kind of a tentative goal of being able to cycle to and from work most days AND do my grocery shopping on Clyde within a year.

Yeah, well, I'm off till January 5 now, so my commuting year is done, and look! I sort of exceeded my goals.

December Bike Log

This is not a testament to my mighty powers so much as to bike commuting being much easier than I thought and way more fun than I could have imagined.

There was only one morning in December where I had to force myself to get on my bike. That day, the vision of this big shiny 100% being some paltry 93.2% or something tweaked my almost-nonexistent competitive streak. Every other morning it's been nothing but a pleasure.

The benefits so far:
  • Surprisingly firm thighs
  • Mood! Lack of bad ones!
  • Parking money saved based on my bad habit of driving to work on bad-mood days: at least $200
  • Bus fare theoretically saved if I hadn't already bought an annual pass in May: around $100
  • Freedom from negative self-image (yeah, priceless)
  • I see my town at times and from angles I've never experienced before
  • A whole new socioeconomic and political Thing (with concomitant slew of new blogs to read and new Twitterers to follow
  • Smugness. Seriously. It is AMAZING, the power of self-satisfaction (get your mind out of the gutter! Not that kind...)

And what about the downsides? To be fair, there are a couple.
  • My knees and hips hurt a little more than when I was complete slugbait
  • Bike-hatred. It exists. It's a whole minor subcategory of uglymind. And now I know about it and can't unknow it
  • A few purchasing mistakes while I was enthusiastically finding my cycling style
  • And, um...
Nope, that's it.

So far neither rain nor cold nor dark of night has stopped me, and yeah, yeah, that's all very well, but WHAT ABOUT SNOW AND SLEET? Well, to quote Jayne, that'll be an interesting day. They do make studded bike tires...

Surprisingly firm thighs

makes me want to leer, inappropriately :-)

\cycling/

I'm so impressed by how quickly you've become completely committed and by how positive an experience it's been.

Hell, they make me want to leer! I'll put a hand down there for some legit purpose like straightening my skirt and I'm all, "Wow, firm!"

Hee! It's kind of different.

I have been drinking and watching White Collar, and both of those things fill me with glee. You risk mention of pretty, flowered bonnets and a whole air-flow...

White Collar is, yes, gleeful. The younger guy reminds me a great deal of Sean Maher (especially in certain moments from certain angles), and the premise is deliciously ridiculous and fun, and I'm looking forward to more episodes.

I've started a holiday rewatching of Firefly and Serenity, myself, and they continue to be proof that great writing never grows old.

Happy drinking and watching! Sounds like a lovely Yuletide.

We've already watched Firefly this year and come to the same conclusion :-)

I hadn't perceived the Matt Bomer/Sean Maher connection, but I can see what you mean. White Collar is a rewatch for me - I'm hooked - and a first time for Mr L. I think he's going to be hooked too.

Congratulations to you!!
I can identify with the seeing the town from different angles. Especially when I realized and enjoyed commuting without the shell of a car around me. Very exhilarating.
I don't know that I would ever commute on ice or a whole lotta snow.
Once again, congratulations.

Thank you! I'd have said DEFINITELY no ice or snow, but then I started reading Let's Go Ride A Bike, a blog about cycle-chic commuting year round in Chicago. Ladies in dresses, seriously, riding to work in Chicago in the winter.

That's when I started thinking hm...maybe...

Of course, I don't have any serious hills to contend with.

Woot! That is quite an achievement in such a short time. Go, you!

Thank you. The next test will be Vacation: The Idle Days of Winter. We'll see how I do getting on my bike when there's no compelling daily reason for doing it.

Thank you!

I will admit that it's snowing here today for the first time this season, and I didn't try to venture out. I am a snow wimp.

I am, too, and I drive a van 60 miles to work - no biking here.
