Meet my fancy recording studio!

As threatened yesterday: photos are back!

012, originally uploaded by DarkEmerald.

The only modification I made was to put a cuphook in the ceiling so I could hang that gray sweater-coat on the left there. Otherwise it's just scarves and shirts on the shelves, and spare pillows stuffed into the empty spaces, and a barstool that barely fits through the doorway.

The USB microphone is hiding among the shirts right in the center of the picture.

I have to step into the tiny open space with my computer in my arms, scrunch around and pull the stool in after me, then sit down. Water bottle and teacup are on another stool outside the closet, and reaching for them makes lots of shick-shick noises which have to be edited out.

But it's cozy and pretty comfy once I'm in there, and I get a nice intimate, non-echoey sound.

What the heck is "podfic" and "podbang" Recording studio I understand. I think. What are you recording? I presume I'm coming late to the party.

Re: another translation needed for befuddled senior citizen
Excellent question!

Podfic. First there was iPod--the music-listening device from Apple. Then came podcasts--recordings in the style of radio shows (interviews, discussions, etc) designed to be put up on the web, downloaded to the iPod and listened to on the go.

First there were books on tape, then on CDs, then audiobooks--digital, downloadable versions of a book read aloud.

It was not a big leap for people who enjoy fanfiction to want it in audio form. Podfic is that form.

First there was "Big Bang," challenges to writers of fanfic in various fandoms to write big, long stories--because most everyone loves a good novel-length fic.

Then there was Podbang, a challenge to RECORD long works of fanfiction--to make podfics out of them, so people could listen while commuting and doing housework and stuff, and so the visually impaired could come to the fanfic party, too.

I'm currently working on recording a 100,000 word piece of Supernatural fanfiction by another author. Hence the "recording studio."

So there you go: podfic and Podbang. In a rather big nutshell.

lol -- sounds like the book in the Old Testament that has all the "begats"

Well, I finally got an iPod Shuffle. My granddaughter got it for me for my birthday in April and I still haven't taken it out of the box. It's a pretty little thing, though.

Thanks for the explanation. You young whippersnappers who are so into modern technology leave me limp with amazement. Have lots of fun in your recording booth!

I'm 54 in three weeks.

Happy birthday ahead of time! Oh, heck, 54 is just a baby. Kind of a wrinkly baby, maybe, but still just a baby.

Did you every realize that women age geographically?
The eyebrows go north, the boobs go south, and the butt goes east and west.

I hadn't noticed that about the eyebrows. Most everything goes south, as far as I can tell.

Now I'm thinking about men and Florida.

*twirls you* I LOVE your creativity! That's awesome! Way to improvise baby! Plus, your voice was made to Podfic, especially SPN fic. I cannot wait for you to finish this. I'll get to enjoy my favorite story, with my eyes closed, comfy in my bed, and hopefully dream of Dean. You da best!

It's VERY ordinary. I'm quite pleased with it.

in case i haven't mentioned it lately: you're awesome.

p.s. you like due south? *swoon* whut? me stalking you? OF COURSE NOT.

I'm a HUGE Due South fan! I came very late to the fanfic (just last year or so) but I loved the show before I knew what slash was. I expect I'll be podficcing some DS, if it hasn't already been done.
