The Air Is Fresher Out Here Anyway

owzers pointed me to the news about Louisiana's anti-gay-marriage constitutional amendment. My heart is tired of grief and despair.

It occurs to me that these are the last-gasp efforts of baby souls to keep the moribund institution of marriage on life-support. They're scared to death that all their little structures are being dismantled by a natural development of human awareness.

These frightened children in adult bodies are welcome to their institution. People will continue to love each other, and frankly, if the establishment forces more and more "alternative lifestyle" people outside the palisades, what they're really doing is freeing those people from the constraints of the ugly, dying, rotting culture that lives inside. New sprouts are shooting up from the compost. The scared defenders of "decency" can only stomp on so many of them.

Those banned from the legal contract of marriage are forced out into the fresh air, but the it's not just gays. Anyone who doesn't want American Idol and Diet Coke in their lives is marginalized to some extent. Anyone who doesn't want allopathic medicine--or who through lack of insurance is can't get allopathic medicine--already has one foot outside the city walls. People who chose not to own cars, or not to eat meat, or not to borrow money, are all one step over the line.

And once that step is taken, we start to see this whole other world, a universe of life-affirming, natural choices creating joy and possibility, outside the beltway of our suicidal culture.

Every individual and couple and family who gets excommunicated from some aspect of culture becomes a little like Harrison Ford and Sean Young at the end of Blade Runner, leaving the city and seeing for the first time the amazing beauty of freedom outside the walls.

Haven't touched a drop since the election -- my way of chucking my teddy into the corner. And I'm sure my body is grateful!
