Commute Challenge Results

Bike Commute Challenge month ends today. It was a chilly and damp 48F/9C this morning, and I was running late, but I wasn't about to miss the last day of the challenge. So I stuck a flannel shirt between my blouse and my jacket, and hared off as fast as I reasonably could.

Thirty minutes from my front porch to getting on the elevator at work! Thirty minutes! With improved strength, a better route, and better riding skills (and a near-complete lack of other cyclists on damp mornings), I've cut 25% off my commute time. Woo hoo! Even my best bus commute takes 35 minutes.

Bike Commute Final

Now to keep up a 50%-ish rate of bike commuting all year long.

What's extra cool is that instead of just riding home after work today, I rode to my healthcare appointment (new route) and to my mom's house after that, and then to a cafe where I'm presently having a bowl of soup and using their wifi before going to an evening presentation, from which I'll ride home.

It's sooooo fun!

I forget where you're located, but yeah, weather is a bit of an issue here too--not so much terrible cold as nasty wet--so, not life threatening but decidedly unpleasant.

Still, I figure every cycle trip I make is a pound or two of CO2 I keep from the air and about a billion endorphins released into my bloodstream.

Thank you! Now, as I've commented above, I must begin the phase of just riding to work because that's what I do, rather than to rack up points.

Great job! Isn't it cool traveling without the shell of a car surrounding you?
Now how the F did I not know about the cool commuting form on BTA's website? I will track my numbers for the month, next year.

There's so much to love about cycling, and that feeling of the wind rushing past is certainly one of them. I also love the sense of freedom--come and go at will, slip in and out of small spaces (while having most of the advantages of using the public roadway), park for free--and the physical benefits. I'm more relaxed all day long when I ride, and I sleep better at night. I've noticed some new muscles, too, which happened a lot faster than I'd have thought.

The BTA calculator is fun. I'm not sure it sums up for any other month than September, but apparently you can use it all year round to record your rides.
