Thunder thighs

I've shaved a few minutes off my commute time four ways:

  • Better route: I've found a good mix of low-traffic and direct that serves me pretty well
  • Bolder riding: I'm getting better at moving out into traffic, claiming my place, and staying in motion
  • More bike skill: I'm anticipating gear-shifts, which means better time uphill, and better starts from full stops
  • Goin' faster!

It's the last one that's the coolest. My muscles are getting stronger. And I'm using more of them! Clyde isn't a "stand on the pedals" road or racing bike, but I'm getting some butt-muscle action in anyway. And quads! It's like there's a wonder chemical locked up in my quadriceps, and when I push myself up an incline, it gets released, and I feel power radiating from my thighs.

I mean, seriously: power. Radiating. I feel like Wonder Woman. I'm friends with EVERYONE. People smile at me--totally unlikely people, like, all of them. I am the queen of everything!

Clyde = best investment I ever made.

Hey, I'm just copying my sister and 6.5% of all other commuters in Portland. I hope you do! Seems like there's plenty of bike-riding weather in Chicago, if not every day all year round.

I tell ya, it's like magic drugs of happiness.

Just found this blog today--a year-round Chicago cyclist who's into the chic. Check it out!

And have a look at her dressing for winter cycling video. Very inspiring!

Your joy and empowerment over biking makes me smile just from reading about it on the computer screen, I can imagine it's more contagious in person.

"Addictive" is a word that's bandied about quite a bit by cyclists, and I don't think it's far off the mark. I'm really amazed. It's been like a conversion or something.

Brilliant news. It's great that you can see a measurable increase in power so quickly.

Yeah, the more-or-less measurable stuff, like commute time, sweatiness, out-of-breathness, and amount of pain/struggle going up that same hill again are all satisfactorily declining, but the feeling! I suppose you could measure it by counting endorphins in a blood sample or something, but otherwise it's just this amazing, ineffable sense of well-being that completely explains to me why so many people cycle.

You are becoming my idol! I love how excited you are about this bike thing and how well you describe it all to us whimps who are still dependent on our gas guzzling vehicles. You are SO cool!

Well, right at the moment I'm not cool, I'm hot and sweaty. Rode TO work, rode the Eastbank loop at lunchtime, rode FROM work to my mom's house, and just got home.

I can't wait to indoctrinate you into the cult!

I'm so happy for you!

Thanks! I tell ya, body chemistry is EVERYTHING! And this huffing and puffing up bridge ramps and neighborhood streets makes the body chemistry very, very happy.

He's superior to a boyfriend in several important respects.
