Globe Haul

Here's a pretty picture of the bike I'm considering.

It's called the "Haul", by Specialized/Globe--because it's a "cargo" bike. The rear platform arrangement is good for panniers, I gather, and the frame is strong enough for a trailer. Which...unlikely in my case, but a couple of grocery bags? Definitely.

Besides the obvious pretty olive-green-and-luggage-leather coloring, what one is supposed to note are:

a) That drum thing on the rear hub. The (8 speed) gears are hidden in there, and that keeps things very low-maintenance.
b) That chain. It's not a chain, it's a carbon belt! Apparently very quiet and also very low-maintenance and way less likely to break than a chain.

Nice, huh? I'm going to order it just as soon as avventura1234 says it's okay. I think some handlebar streamers may be in order.

I like it 'cause it's girly without being, you know, pink or something. I'm excited.

wow! that is a really beautiful bike!

the whole belt instead of chain sounds kinda cool.

you should totally get handlebar streamers! and a bell!

A bell is standard on this bike. And standard for Portland cycling, because there are so many bridges where bikes and pedestrians share the way.

I was thinking instead of streamers, maybe tiny red pompoms? Christmas lights? Stickers? Baseball cars clothespinned to the spokes? Hee! IDK.

Mostly, I'm thinking about clever ways to store it indoors in my itty-bitty house.

Oooh, so pretty! And very elegant. Very classy and timeless. Although steamers? Would somehow be the perfect complement.

I know, right? I'm really tempted. Of course, first I must buy the bicycle. Early next week, when Hel gets back from an out of town jaunt, I will drag her along and get her seal of approval, then place my order.

Hey, maybe I'll get good enough to ride as far as your house!

Wow! Fancy with disc brakes as well. And the internal hub gears, even fancier. That's a nice one.
Mine is the Specialized Globe Vienna. It's doing the job but the one thing I've had to do was get a stronger rear wheel as I had a habit of popping spokes.
Hopefully your spokes and wheel are a sturdier Specialized version.

Re: Nice!
The bike I tried out at River City Bikes was the Globe Vienna, and it's what led me to ask the fateful question "Does it come in any other colors?" Hah! That's when he brought out the 2010 catalog, and then the 2010 "Do Not Ride!" view-only prototype of the Globe Haul from Upstairs, and the price doubled.

So, in my reading about Specialized and the Globe line, I've not read anything about weak rear wheels. I appreciate the warning--I'll be sure to ask before I buy. I don't think replacing that fancy closed-drum rear wheel would be a small matter.

Jeez, this is like buying a car! I still haven't determined if I can afford the Haul, but it looks so ideal for my intended uses that I'm going to make the effort.

I'm so looking forward to joining the huge Portland cycling community!

Very cool! Maybe a little rubber horn too! I may have to find a rental place so we can go riding sometime! I've always wanted to experiment with biking but Bob won't try it.

Oh! That would be fun! And I love the idea of a rubber horn. Hee! It fits the retro style of the bike.
