Ice cream

I spent the better part of yesterday making Neapolitan ice cream in the form of a cake for a family birthday party.

My sis made the birthday cake in the form of the most decadent little mocha-frosted chocolate cupcakes.

All sugared out now.

I can see the fruit! And maybe little vanilla-bean scrapings or seeds... and you are an evil wench because now I'm contemplating learning how to make ice-cream.

You can indeed see bits of real strawbs and the vanilla seeds.

Ice cream can be very simple to make. At its heart, it's just milk and cream, sugar and a flavor component. It's the stirring against the icy wall, constantly scraping the frozen layer off and blending it into the mixture until the whole has a smooth, movable, semi-frozen consistency, that takes the time and trouble.

Happly, the icy wall is easily attained with a simple hand-cranked ice cream maker that you stick in the freezer overnight before using.

The result is fresh, more or less wholesome (depending on how you feel about dairy, and whether you use organic, etc.), and generally rather impressive because it's not something most people bother to make themselves.
