So...

how much am I going to hate Windows Vista when I inevitably have to replace my computer?

I've heard nothing but trash about Vista, and both the organization I work for and the huge software corporation currently working side by side with us still specify Windows XP on their computers. I hear that Dell is offering a "downgrade" to Windows XP on their new laptops.

All of this tells me that I should be very very dubious about going to Vista. Any thoughts, anyone?

Bob's newer laptop came with Vista, no options available for XP. He has hated it. We had to buy all new programs to be compatible, none of his old ones would work on the new pc. He is always having problems doing stuff on it and loading new pictures into his My Pictures is a nightmare. He never knows where they have loaded, it just does it's thing and then closes the wizard windows. You have to go searching around. It's never the same place twice. Bob has lots of picture folders that he has to go through to find the new ones and then he has to move them where he wanted them in the first place. I've come up with a way for him to do it without loosing them but it takes a lot of fooling around. So, I'm not anxious to go to Vista myself. This old Dell is just going to have to take me a little farther down the road.

Other friends that have had to switch hate it just as much. I've heard no good things about Vista.

Wow! That's more damning than I've heard. Thanks for heads-up. I didn't realize you'd partly made the switch at your house. I don't mind learning new stuff, but if I have to buy all new third-party software, fuggeddaboudit.
