So...

how much am I going to hate Windows Vista when I inevitably have to replace my computer?

I've heard nothing but trash about Vista, and both the organization I work for and the huge software corporation currently working side by side with us still specify Windows XP on their computers. I hear that Dell is offering a "downgrade" to Windows XP on their new laptops.

All of this tells me that I should be very very dubious about going to Vista. Any thoughts, anyone?

We bought a great spec cheap PC from a reputable store but were a touch wary that it had Vista installed. We tried to partition the hard drive to put Ubuntu on it as well and it basically threw a wobbly and a large number of functions refused to work. Vista was so damned irritating we returned the PC on the 30 day guarantee and got our money back. We could really do with a new PC but are seriously considering our options based on our experienec with Vista. We'd pay to downgrade to XP and are also considering ditching Windows altogether and following the penguin.

I'm not sure I'm geek-woman enough to go the route of the 'guin. It solves the MS annoyance factor, but not the "replace all your software" issue--which will plague me, it seems, whether I go Mac, Ubuntu OR Vista.

Sometimes I think I hate technology, but what I really hate is corporate control.
