Bento Diary

I think I'm getting the hang of this bento-box lunch thing.

Thursday:

Left: steamed garlic tops and watermelon hearts and flowers.
Middle: Blueberries in my yogurt, carrots, little local strawbs, and mung beans with a prune "O".
Right: Rice balls wrapped in nori, tamagoyaki (rolled omelette).

Friday:

Left: white asparagus and red bell-pepper decorations
Middle: Whoa, that yogurt is white! Fava beans with bacon and garlic stems (no liver, no chianti). Yellow kiwi and carrots.
Right: More rice balls, another rolled omelette.

My rolled omelettes are coming out better, and I'm getting more creative with the veggies. My main discovery has been that there's not much point in going for stunning variety. There's nothing wrong with eating a lot of the same staple things every day.

I haven't had a chance yet to rave about the awesomeness that is you and your bento. Seriously, I have heaps of admiration for all you've been up to of late, and your appreciation/celebration of real food and making it both gorgeous and yummy? ::applause::

*takes a bow*

Thank you, ma'am. Coming from you, that's extra-nice, because I know how creative, talented and committed you are yourself.

The life-transition, while engaging and pretty radical, has felt natural and mostly easy. I've been drawn, not pushed. It's the only way to get anywhere.

Ooh! Did you make steamed buns?

My workmates look at my lunches with a kind of distant admiration, as if the skills to do this sort of thing belong to another species altogether.

Also? They look askance at the seaweed.

I'm using a bamboo steamer, but all my reading indicates that a veggie steamer will work just as well, with only one extra step: drape a tea-towel or two between the pot lid and the buns, to prevent water dripping down onto the dough.

Good luck!

Thanks! I'm having fun with these, and they're really changing the way I view breakfast and lunch.

Thanks. I like eating my art and making it go away. New art every day!

I've decided that kiwi is the perfect breakfast fruit. Just the right size, sweet and soft and yummy.

I'm thinking of planting a vine for next year. I hear they grow very well here.
