Floored

My good friend [personal profile] roseambr and Mr Roseambr sacrificed a gorgeous spring day yesterday to share their expertise, their power tools and their knees and backs in installing my new laminate floor. Their precision and attention to detail have resulted in a gorgeous installation.

DarkEm's new black laminate bedroom floor in the afternoon light, with a white fur rug and some purple and magenta fabric samples

It's a curious thing, moving from design to execution. I'm much happier thinking up possibilities than pinning them down. Though I'm extremely satisfied with the results of all my planning, I'm aware of an antsy, anxious feeling today as the plan manifests, and all alternative possibilities drop away. I don't just have the cool idea of a black floor--I've now actually got a black floor--more or less forever. It's no longer possible to rearrange the furniture: everything now has to go where I drew it on the floorplan.

So though there's quite a bit more physical work to do, the really fun part is done, and soon I'll be back to my regularly-scheduled retirement. I'm gonna need a new project!

I like your black floor.
I am one of those weird folk who actually thinks certain shades of gray look good in interior design. LOL I find it soothing.

Re: I like your black floor.
Gray is wonderfully soothing and restful. Until a couple of weeks ago, I had a gray feature wall in my bedroom, and it was always pleasing.

I think one of your walls painted a pale or silvery gray would look cool with your white and black.

Re: For instance
It might! I'm done painting, though. The white will have to masquerade as gray in certain lights.

Thanks! Me too. We had to take the bedroom door off to get into the corner with the laminate, so I'm sitting here in my living room admiring the unobstructed view.

That looks so smart! Well done on actually executing the plan; I love thinking about possibilities but rarely carry them through to an actual plan, let alone do anything. Maybe the next phase of your retirement could involve working in your garden, now that spring's on it's way?

Execution has never been my long suit, either: hence the bedroom that was completely unaltered for 20 years. Apparently only the rare coincidence of time, inclination, and available funds is enough to motivate me.

Gardening, I'm afraid, is largely a thing of the past for me. I was an avid gardener for several years, and put quite a bit of structure into my yard--trees, shrubs, hardscaping and perennials that continue to function well without irrigation (there's no rain here from July through September). I ruined my hands doing it, however, and now can only manage an hour or two of tool-gripping work of any kind, indoors or out.

So I pay a guy to come and mow and weed-whack a couple of times a month, and call it good. I still enjoy putting together window boxes and hanging porch-pots of colorful annuals, though, and I'll do those in about a month.

Oh, this is VERY beautiful. Also, have no idea what the purple fabric is, but you NEED that colour somewhere with that lovely floor.

Thank you! I completely agree about the need for a purple accent in the room.

I have a rather stark, modern armchair, all straight lines and dark metal, with off-white leather upholstery that the cat has gradually destroyed. Rather than replacing it, I've painted the frame high-gloss white, and will re-upholster the cushions with the purple velvet in the photo. I think it should look pretty nice in that corner.
