How I spent my summer stay-cation

Hey! It's 3:20 in the afternoon and it only got up to 91 today. Woo hoo! That's about nine degrees less infernal than predicted.

Accordingly, I've spent the day on Project Mudroom. It's difficult to convey in a photograph, but the space is partly situated over the basement stairs, so one wall has no floor under it, and painting it, or the ceiling above it, requires putting a ladder basically kind of halfway down the stairs, then climbing it.

So I did that. And the vault-y part of the mudroom is now primed. Go me.

Then...concrete! I love concrete! I got to make a little form out of boards and duct tape, and repair a section of floor with Rockite. I am now sort of nuts about Rockite and will be looking for other places to use it because it's really cool stuff. Rrrrrockite, baby!

Now it's 5:00 and the temp says 94, but it seems genuinely cooler than yesterday and therefore my goal is to have this fucker mudroom painted by bedtime.

And also post Chapter 35 of Restraint. Which is done.

Yay for you for doing these repairs on your own! You are more like John than like Tristan, yes?

And yay for Restraint!

Hah!!! Thanks, I now have Herby Hancock's 'Rocket' in my head now courtesy of the Rockite. I'm still working through my minor Reno plans, but yoursare progressing much faster than mine. Stairs and ladders are an evil combination aren't they?

I do hope this stretch of warm dry weather sticks around for a few more days. Calgary for the most part has missed the heavy rains, but it works out great for some of my outside projects aka yardwork from hell.

Yes, actually in this instance the hot and dry weather is a little better than wet and rainy would be. It's uncomfortable for me, but I'm tramping in and out the back door quite a bit, and though it's dusty, at least it's not muddy.

Good luck with your projects too!

Wow, I salute your determination and hardiness to continue onward with your project in the midst of this last few days of heat. Granted, today was better than yesterday (OMG FLAMES LICKING THE SIDE OF MY FACE), but the work you're doing in 90 degree temps? Sucks. I've done it, I know.

But I also know how the drive to get something done, once it's begun, can be a bracing motivator even in conditions like these (as I said, I've done it, I know :). Kudos to you, madam, my hat is off. Hope you partook of the BToR frequently and with vigor.

By tonight, the BToR wasn't adequate to the task, and I resorted to the BoI (no, not that!--the Bottle of Ibuprofen). I know myself: once I come to the angle of repose on a project like this, no matter what the degree of actual completion, I'm done, and will live more or less forever with the results. So I'm pretty motivated to get a result I can live with.

Today, this meant not only pouring (small amounts of) concrete, but some really wearisome scrubbing of that damned foundation wall (from which the key areas of old epoxy coating did, at last, lift), and taking up one of those lame little metal-strip thresholds which in turn meant breaking a couple of linoleum tiles, which means finding replacements, and down the rabbit hole I go.

This is why I don't like painting. It always turns into minor remodeling. But I'm almost there!

Wow. I think it just shows what a person can do. It's very impressive. Also the heat must make everything that much more tiring.

I have to admit that the prospect of posting a set of "after" pictures here has been goading me on. Everyone likes before-and-afters!

And if I run out of vacation before I finish this project, it will remain forever unfinished, because I know myself. I've got two more days, so I'm soldiering on, and heaven forbid I run into any snags at this late date.
