Accessibility and the alt tag

I'm trying to make my posts more accessible, and since I post a lot of illustrative pictures, I thought it would be a good practice to include a description with each one, but I find that I need some help.

My reading suggests that putting descriptive information in the alt portion of the img tag makes that description available to text-reading browsers, but I can't figure out how to test it, since I don't have text-reading capabilities.

Any suggestions? Can anyone verify that the alt text on the picture immediately following this sentence is accessible to a text-reader?

You just have to hover your cursor over an image for alt text to appear. You alt text shows up fine for me.

When I hover, I get the image title, but not the alt text, and if I delete the image title (which comes over from Flickr), I get nothing. I wonder if it's a browser issue. I'm using Chrome for Linux, so can you say "alternative"?

Thanks for checking. You can guess when I took that picture! :D

:) It was a great day for a great shot. Sigh. My bridge.

It's gotta be the browser (or browser/OS combo). I guess that's a feature they haven't gotten around to yet? Though it seems like a pretty basic one to have left out....

I figured it out! The contents of the TITLE attribute is what you see when you hover. The contents of the ALT attribute is what you see if the image doesn't load.

I turned off images in Firefox, and saw my ALT text (and the awesome ALT text in everything in Dreamwidth, which is pretty committed to accessibility) where the pictures would be.

The same thing is not yet true in Chrome. Tsk tsk Google.

Thank you for checking. And LJ is not notifying again today, apparently.
